A desi household has its own charms. Whether it is the shopping bag within a shopping bag or those gossipy aunties dying to know your next move, our desi households contain both positive aspects as well as negative aspects that will make you pull your hair out. If you are a Pakistani, doesn’t matter if you live in the country or outside, you will always carry a part of that desi household within you. Given below are some of the most common things that scream the word desi.

1. Shopping Bags Within Shopping Bags

Every household runs around the idea of functioning as economically as possible. On some level, that means that you have to secure every plastic shopping bag that you bring from outside. There will be a big shopping bag that will contain smaller shopping bags, all of which will come in handy. It is literally one of the most desi things you will find common in nearly all the houses.

2. Qorma Within Ice Cream Boxes

If you open the fridge and spot the ice cream box placed in the middle, chances are you already know. There is not a hint of the foamy and frothy frozen dessert in those boxes. Instead, they will be filled with qorma or food leftovers from the last night. That is exactly how desi households work. Why throw away the perfectly good plastic boxes when you can use them like this?

3. A Shopping Bag Over a Dustbin

Desi households take economical things the next way. We often cover our dustbins with a shopping bag that wraps around the interior of the dustbin and contains all the garbage. It is quite a clever strategy, given that you don’t need to regularly wash the dustbin and the garbage bag can be easily taken out. It is one of those things that you will find in nearly every household.

4. Plastic Covering

We desis take our household items very seriously, and we will do anything to protect them from dust or damage. And that is why we often cover our couches or remote controls with plastic coverings. Because only God can help you if you end up staining that fifteen-year-old sofa or end up losing one button of the remote controls.

5. Sewing Kits in Cookie Boxes

The cookie boxes that we have in our houses are often lacking their original contents. You will find them stuffed with a sewing needle and thread bundles, and they will lay somewhere near the sewing machine. We believe in making good use of even plastics, and these are the good old metallic boxes we are talking about.

6. The Holy Cutlery Reserved for Guests

There will be at least a line of utensils and cutlery that will only be reserved for the guests. Either your mother had gotten these as part of her dowry, or your father once gifted those antique items to your mother as part of honeymoon gifts. No matter their origin, one thing is certain. Nobody touches them other than the guests.

7. Don’t Eat in Front of Guests

Some of the desi household things make no sense at all. This is common, especially when your guests are invited to a tea break and you are supposed to just see them gulping down all those biscuits while you patiently wait for them to leave. Only then will you have the chance to nibble on those snacks that they left behind.

So these were the desi household things that are found in almost all the houses.
