Two Pakistani Army majors embraced martyrdom as their helicopter crashes in Siachen on Monday due to bad weather. The news of the crash was announced by the military’s media wing. “Both pilots Major Irfan Bercha and Major Raja Zeeshan Jahanzeb embraced Shahadat,” the ISPR said. Siachen is one of the biggest located in the Karakorum Range and is the highest battlefield between Pakistan and India.
Rescue troops were sent to the location as soon as the news of the helicopter crash broke. However, no further details have been disclosed by the military. Siachen has been brutal for many of our men in the army in the past aswell. It is indeed one of the coldest mountain ranges and several of our Pakistani troops have died due to avalanches and bitter cold weather.
Chief Minister of Gilgit Baltistan Khalid Khurshid Khan issued a statement, expressing grief over the incident and extending his condolences to the families of the martyred pilots. Later, Maryam Nawaz also expressed her sorrow in a tweet. PML-N Shahbaz Sharif also tweeted “It deeply pains me to learn about the martyrdom of two officers of the Pakistan Army in a chopper crash in Siachen. The nation remains in eternal debt to our brave soldiers whose sacrifices ensure our safety and future.”

The weather conditions of Siachen are itself extremely bitter and horrific for the. Freezing winds and avalanches are quite common. Temperatures go down as low as -50 degrees Celsius, and the rarity of air and associated lack of oxygen pose significant challenges. This means, for instance, that the lift capacity of the special helicopters operating in the area is reduced when they go up to high-altitude posts. Troops need special apparel and gear for survival. Many are incapacitated due to frostbite and other weather-related conditions. There is not enough oxygen to light fires for even cooking purposes.
The news of the helicopter crash has saddened the entire nation. Every household is sending their condolences for the families of the young army pilots Major Irfan Bercha and Major Raja Zeeshan Jahanzeb.
