Pakistan’s political situation is besieged with defamation, no-trust motion, distrust in government, and whatnot. All this is creating an atmosphere of uncertainty for all in Pakistan and outside of Pakistan. Daily we are hearing news of no-trust motions filed against some entity. Recently, one such step was taken against the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan. However, the no-trust motion was dismissed by Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri on the grounds that no foreign power should interfere in the democratic process of the country. After the dismissal of the no-confidence motion, the President of Pakistan on the advice of the Prime Minister dissolved the National Assembly. This move however was seen as unconstitutional by the opposition and many others. The office of the Chief Minister of Punjab is vacant since the resignation of the former CM Usman Buzdar. The government is expected to nominate PML-Q’s Pervaiz Elahi as the new CM. Amid this, the opposition held a symbolic session in which Hamza Shahbaz won the elections held at the event. The opposition is likely to nominate Hamza Shahbaz as the candidate for CM of Pakistan and is surely going to be a tough competition for Pervaiz Elahi.

Supreme Court’s Decision

A bench of five judges in the Supreme Court passed a verdict on the Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri’s decision regarding the dismissal of the no-confidence motion and dissolution of the National Assembly. The decision was passed on the dissolution of the National Assembly as all the five judges were against the decision and declared it to be unconstitutional. The court remarked that “contrary to the Constitution and the law and of no legal effect, and the same are hereby set aside.” The ruling further said “It is further declared that the [National] Assembly was in existence at all times, and continues to remain and be so.” This means that all the activities of the National Assembly are restored. Moreover, once again the whole country is back to square one as again no-confidence voting would be carried out against the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan.
