When two more earthquakes struck Turkey, killing at least three people, rescuers resumed their hunt for survivors among the wreckage.

In the southeast, close to the border with Syria, where major earthquakes on February 6th had ravaged both nations, tremors measuring 6.4 and 5.8 on the Richter scale were felt. Turkey was hit again and the repercussions are heartbreaking.

In Turkey and Syria, the preceding earthquakes resulted in the deaths of 44,000 people and left tens of thousands of others homeless.

According to Turkey’s disaster and emergency agency, the tremor with a magnitude of 6.4 hit at 20:04 local time (17:04 GMT), and was followed by the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 three minutes later.
The three fatalities were reported to have happened in the cities of Antakya, Defne, and Samandag, according to the Minister of the Interior Süleyman Soylu, who urged citizens not to visit potentially hazardous structures.

This indeeed is very heart aching to see. “I thought the earth was going to split open under my feet,” local resident Muna al-Omar told Reuters news agency, crying as she held her seven-year-old son. She had been in a tent in a park in the city centre when the new earthquakes hit.

According to the AFP news agency, 18-year-old Ali Mazlum was searching for the remains of family members who had been killed in earlier earthquakes when he felt the most recent shocks.
“You don’t know what to do,” he added, “so we held each other and the walls started to collapse right in front of us.”
Turkey was hit again and the quakes were detected in Egypt and Lebanon in addition to Syria on Monday, and it is estimated that 470 individuals in Syria sought medical attention for injuries sustained during the tremors.

All our prayers are with the people of Turkey. May All protect us all.
