Arooj Aftab’s “Udhero Na” Submitted For Grammys

Last year, Aftab was nominated for the Best New Artist category as well. The 37-year-old, who has lived in New York for some 15 years, has been steadily gaining global acclaim for her work that fuses ancient Sufi traditions with inflections of folk, jazz and minimalism.

Arooj Aftab had been the most talked about singer earlier this year since she became the first Pakistani to have won a Grammy award. Now, she has proved that there’s no stopping her as another of her songs has been picked up for Grammy nominations.

Her song ‘Udhero Na’ featuring Anoushka Shankar has been considered for the Best Global Music Performance and Best Arrangement, Instrument and Vocal categories.

On Tuesday, she posted on Instagram “Udhero Na starring Anoushka Shankar is for your vote consideration in the Grammy voting category for Best Global Music Performance.” Aftab continued, quoting from the song, “ankhon main silay hoay ho, udhero na… This song is about moving on from an ex. We’ve finally defeated them, so they must win for sure.

Last year, Aftab was nominated for the Best New Artist category as well. The 37-year-old, who has lived in New York for some 15 years, has been steadily gaining global acclaim for her work that fuses ancient Sufi traditions with inflections of folk, jazz and minimalism.

She has released three albums so far namely Bird Under Water (2014), Siren Islands (2018) and Vulture Prince (2021). The Grammys will take place on February 5 in Los Angeles. The nominations will be announced on November 15.
