LeBron James, forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, broke Kareem Abdul-record Jabbar’s for most points in NBA history on Tuesday with a fadeaway jump jumper at the end of the third quarter in a home game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“King James,” who needed 36 points to beat Abdul-record Jabbar’s of 38,387, threw the sold-out crowd into a frenzy as the ball splashed over the net, lifting his arms in victory as his teammates hugged him.
Former NBA champion and Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who defeated Wilt Chamberlain with his trademark skyhook on April 5, 1984, was in attendance on Tuesday and applauded LeBron James when he broke the record.
LeBron James was given the opportunity to address the fans when the game was halted to honour his accomplishment.
I simply want to thank the Laker fans, because you guys are special, James remarked.
“It’s unreal to be in Kareem’s company; it’s a great honour. Please give ‘The Captain’ a rousing round of applause.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told Reuters it was a “historic moment,” as tributes from his family, US President Joe Biden, and children from his “I Promise School” were played inside the arena.
The attention of the whole public is drawn to historic achievements such as these, not only by basketball aficionados, Silver remarked.
LeBron’s quest for the scoring record will be no different, and it will be well publicised throughout the world.
It was just a matter of time until James broke the mark this season. Many predicted it would happen on Thursday night against Milwaukee, but LeBron James had other plans.
James showed up to the stadium looking like he was on his way to a funeral, wearing a pitch-black suit, shirt, and sunglasses.
