Last Monday, Khan received a broad reprieve from the Islamabad High Court that prevented the PTI leader from being arrested. In three terrorism cases that the provincial capital had filed against him, he also obtained protective bail.
The PTA reported on Saturday that internet connectivity had been restored countrywide, but that social media applications were still suspended and that a decision had not yet been taken about whether to resume use of them.
Khan and the other defendants are accused of misusing Rs50 billion (190 million pounds at the time), which the British National Crime Agency (NCA) sent to the government. In addition, they are charged with receiving ill-gotten gains for the establishment of Al Qadir University in Mouza Bakrala, Sohawa, including more than 458 canals of land.
Members and supporters of PTI insist that the behaviour adopted by law enforcement in the days following the arrest of Imran Khan was unfair and unjust. Peaceful protests were being carried out around the country but police resorted to violent measures. Many innocent protestors were also arrested.
Enraged PTI supporters allegedly set fire to vehicles, including waterboard trucks and a jail van, and engaged in stone-pelting incidents. To disperse the gathering, police were obliged to employ baton charges, tear gas, and water cannons, injuring both demonstrators and law enforcement personnel.
The foreign minister added: “We do not support any effort to ban a political party.” He claimed the PPP did not celebrate or give out sweets whenever a political leader was detained.
