Even though it’s just April, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has already amassed such enormous statistics in its opening weekend in North America that industry experts believe it might finish at the top of the list for the whole year of 2023.
Exhibitor Relations, a company that tracks the entertainment industry, reported on Sunday that the 3D animated film, which was a collaboration between Universal Studios, Nintendo, and Illumination Studios, grossed an estimated $146.4 million in ticket sales over the Easter weekend and $204.6 million in its first five days of release. The company also stated that the film “will easily be the #1 flick of 2023.”
A consensus was reached by expert David A. Gross that “the stats are astounding.” He said that the results were the greatest ever for a first episode animation, and that this was partly due to the film’s wide appeal, which attracted viewers of all ages, including families, young viewers, older viewers, and viewers of both sexes.
Since it is based on one of the most successful video games of all time, “It’s a marketer’s dream,” said Gross.
“John Wick: Chapter 4,” a neo-noir film produced by Lionsgate, came in second place for the weekend with $14.6 million. Nevertheless, the film only sold one-tenth as many tickets as “Super Mario,” placing it in second place.
The director of the thriller, Chad Stahelski, who has worked as a stuntman in the past, is getting a lot of credit for the action choreography in the film. Keanu Reeves plays as the eponymous assassin, who finds himself involved in a conflict with an international criminal organisation.
The film “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” which was released by Paramount and eOne and grossed $14.5 million over the weekend, came in third place. It is a film starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Hugh Grant, and it is based on a well-known role-playing game.
Gross described the latest movie from Amazon Studios, “Air,” which is about the beginning of Nike’s Air Jordan basketball shoe brand as “an outstanding start for a sports drama.” The film made a total of $14.46 million and finished fourth.
