Ahsan Khan breaking gender stereotypes

“My character is a decent and educated man, however, his circumstances are very different from an ordinary person. He has a unique relationship with his wife and children. I would say the series is a romantic story with a bit of satirical humour in it too. Overall, it’s a really interesting package.”

With so many patriarchal plots and gender stereotypes depicted on television, Ahsan Khan and Hira Mani’s new drama, Hum Dono, aims to rewrite how men are portrayed on screen.

In the first two teasers, Ahsan and Hira are shown to be a solid couple in spite of all the difficulties in their marriage. Although the couple’s relationship issues making the show a little intriguing, the third trailer has fans hooked.

In the brief series, Ahsan’s character deviates from the stereotypical gender roles and is shown as being sensitive, delicate, and emotional. He approaches his relationship issues with love, care, and consideration. As the one-minute teaser begins, the Udaari actor expresses his worry that this problem affects real-life relationships as well as ones on screen.

While the series may appear quite intense, Ahsan revealed during a behind the scenes interaction that it’s a lighthearted comedy that is full of entertainment and tear-jerking lessons.

Looking at the vast majority of Pakistani drama productions, maintaining strict gender norms has become the standard. Men abusing their partners physically and screaming at them is accepted in society and on television alike. Instead of just witnessing harmful patterns repeat on film, perhaps the audience could learn something by watching more thought-provoking images of men, like Ahsan’s in Hum Dono.

The first episode of Hum Dono is set to premiere today on Express TV.
