Heartbreak for AFG as SL win by 2 runs and Qualify for Super 4s. Afghanistan’s dreams of making it to the Asia Cup Super 4 stage were dashed Tuesday when they lost to Sri Lanka by two runs.
Afghanistan had to reach a goal of 292 in 37.1 overs. Even though Mohammad Nabi (65) and Hashmatullah Shahidi (59) both hit fifty, they were bowled out for 289 in 37.4 overs. Sri Lanka’s Kasun Rajitha took four wickets.
In the first innings, Sri Lanka got a total of 291 for 8, with Kusal Mendis’s 92 being the highest score. Pathum Nissanka (41 runs), Dimuth Karunaratne (32 runs), Charith Asalanka (36 runs), and Dunith Wellalage (33 not out) were also very important for Sri Lanka. Gulbadin Naib had a score of 4/60 for Afghanistan, and Rashid Khan took two wickets.
A game that people will talk about for years to come! It went back and forth over the course of its length, but in the end, Sri Lanka won. It had its share of excitement as well. Afghanistan needed three runs from one delivery to get through, but Mujeeb holed out at long on. A six could have still given the Afghans a spot, but it looks like the middle players didn’t know that, so the chance was lost. Rahmat Shah laid the groundwork, Mohammad Nabi scored the fastest fifty in an ODI for Afghanistan, Rashid Khan and Najibullah Zadran put on a show at the end, but it wasn’t enough to win.
India into the Super 4 with 10 wicket win over Nepal
Player of the Match: Kusal Mendis We did well with our bats in the first ten overs and in the middle overs. Today, I did my best for today. We were under a lot of stress. They did a fantastic job. It’s hard to bowl when there are four fielders outside the circle. We were good in all three areas, which is why we won. Wellalage was a great bowler. In one over, he took out two batsmen. Matheesha bowled well, too. He’s getting better.
Dasun Shanaka the captain of Sri Lanka: It’s not easy to defend such a high sum. The most important part of the game was DDS and my catch. Mendis and Asalanka did a great job of building up the game. Today, we didn’t chip. Theekshana and Wellalage deserve credit for getting to 291. They played very well to get there. Kasun let us in by opening the door. Nabi had a great turn, and we almost lost the game because of it. We were able to win.
