Latest News: HBO Casts James Potter, Lily Potter and Charlie Weasley
The newest cast announcement filled three roles fans have been asking about for months:
- Jasper Talbot as James Potter: known for Broadchurch and Inter Alia.
- Hannah Chinn as Lily Potter: seen in The Conjuring: Last Rites and Domina.
- Harry Gilby as Charlie Weasley: from The Last Kingdom and Tolkien.
The Charlie news is the big one for book fans. In the movies, Ron’s dragon-loving older brother was cut completely. In Philosopher’s Stone he never shows up in person; he only appears through letters about Norbert the dragon. HBO hasn’t said how he’ll feature yet, but it’s a strong sign the series will be more faithful to the books than the films were.
Meet the Golden Trio: The New Harry, Ron and Hermione
HBO picked three newcomers from a massive open casting call, the same way Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson were found back in 2000.
- Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter: the new Boy Who Lived. His first look in Hogwarts uniform, round glasses and lightning scar went viral the day filming started in July 2025.
- Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger: the brightest witch of her age, now with a fresh take.
- Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley: our new favourite ginger and the heart of the trio.

Harry Potter Season 2 Cast: Kit Harington, Dobby and Young Voldemort
HBO renewed the show for Season 2 before Season 1 even aired. It will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and filming is already underway at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Confirmed Season 2 cast so far:
- Kit Harington as Gilderoy Lockhart: the Game of Thrones star replaced Nicholas Hoult, who had to exit because of scheduling conflicts.
- Billy Barratt as Tom Riddle: the teenage version of Lord Voldemort.
- Lenny Rush as Dobby
- Rafe Spall as Arthur Weasley
- Molly Hewitt-Richards as Moaning Myrtle
- Jasper Ambrose as Colin Creevey
- Peter Serafinowicz as the voice of Peeves: the chaos poltergeist the films cut out completely.
- Bonnie Hill as Ginny Weasley, taking over from Gracie Cochrane.
Who Is Playing Voldemort in the HBO Series?
This is the most searched question about the new cast, and the answer is: HBO hasn’t announced an adult Voldemort yet. Only young Tom Riddle (Billy Barratt) is confirmed for Season 2. Fans keep pushing for Cillian Murphy, and even Ralph Fiennes, the original Voldemort, has publicly backed him for the part. Nothing is official yet, so stay tuned.
Harry Potter HBO Series Trailer and Release Date
HBO dropped the first teaser in March 2026, revealing the official title and the Christmas 2026 premiere. A second teaser followed on September 2, 2026, the iconic date the Hogwarts Express leaves King’s Cross every year.
The series premieres Friday, December 25, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max. HBO hasn’t confirmed whether all eight episodes drop at once or weekly, but HBO usually releases its big shows one episode a week.
Is the HBO Series Better Than the Movies?
Too early to say, but the signs for book fans are strong. With eight hour-long-ish episodes for one book, the show has room for everything the films cut: Peeves, Charlie Weasley, the Flamels, more Dursley chaos and more Hogwarts classmates. The creative team has called it a faithful adaptation, and J.K. Rowling is an executive producer.
The big challenge? The original cast is iconic. Daniel, Rupert and Emma basically are Harry, Ron and Hermione for a whole generation. The new kids have huge shoes to fill.
