Kohli Equals Sachin’s Record as India Thrashed South Africa

 

On Sunday India thrashed co semi finalists South Africa by a big margin of 243 runs. Birthday boy Virat Kohli equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 centuries in ODIs.

It took 277 innings for Virat Kohli to equal Tendulkar’s record of 49 centuries in ODIs. Comparatively it took 438 innings for Sachin Tendulkar to score his 49 centuries, Kohli and Tendulkar were part of India World Cup winning squad in 2011. Taking on his X, the legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar congratulated Virat Kohli on achieving the mile stone and wished him best of luck to score his 50th ton in few days’ time.

In the 35th match of ICC World Cup 2023, India faced co semi finalists South Africa. Batting first India scored 326 runs for the lose of 5 wickets in their 50 overs. Rohit Sharma gave the hosts a good start, scoring quick 40 runs of 24 balls. For the third wicket Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer put on a partnership of 134 runs before Shreyas Iyer got out after scoring 77 runs. Virat Kohli carried on till the end of innings to see his side reach a total of 326 runs for lose of 5 wickets. Kohli remained not out on 101 runs, facing 121 deliveries.

Target of 327 runs seemed very difficult for Proteas as they came to chase in Edan Gardens Kolkata. South African batters trembled right from the start of their innings. No batter was able to stand and build a solid partnership to reach the target. Indian bowling line up who werte coming ay back of a brilliant bowling performance against Sri Lanka, where they bowled out Sri Lanka only for 55 runs, bowled out South Africa only for 83 runs.

This is South Africa’s second lowest total in ODI history and the lowest total in their World Cup history. Marco Jansen was the highest run getter for South Africa with 14 runs.

For India Jadeja took 5 wickets. While Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammad Siraj took 2 wickets each.

With this win India ensured top spot in the group stages of the World Cup. India is looking lethal with 8 wins in 8 matches in the on going World Cup.
