Quick answer: No, you cannot sign up for two Instagram accounts with exactly the same email address. Each email can be attached to only one account. But you can run several accounts without a new email: create the second account from inside the app with Add account, link it through Meta’s Accounts Center, or sign up with your phone number. Instagram lets you switch between up to 5 accounts in the app.
Can You Make 2 Instagram Accounts With the Same Email?
Not at sign-up. When you register, Instagram checks whether the email is already in use. If it is, you will see a message saying another account is using that email, and you cannot continue. This rule exists so that password resets and security alerts always go to one clear owner.
The good news is that Instagram no longer forces you to find a new email for every account. If you create the extra account from an account you are already logged into, Instagram can link them so you log in once and switch with a tap.
4 Ways to Run Multiple Instagram Accounts
| Method | New email needed? | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Add account from inside the app | No | Personal plus a second page, meme page or small business |
| 2. Sign up with your phone number | No (uses phone) | When you want a fully separate login |
| 3. Gmail “+” alias | No new inbox | Keeping all verification emails in one inbox |
| 4. Use a different email | Yes | Brand or client accounts you may hand over later |
Method 1: Create a Second Account With “Add Account”
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap your username at the top of the screen.
- Tap Add Instagram account, then Create new account.
- Choose a username and password and follow the steps.
- When asked, choose to log in using your existing account details, so you can switch without logging out.
The new account is now linked to your first one, and you can switch between them by tapping your username.
Method 2: Sign Up With a Phone Number
On the sign-up screen, choose Sign up with mobile number instead of email. Instagram sends a code by SMS. Each phone number, like each email, can only be the main contact for one account.
Method 3: Use a Gmail “+” Alias
Gmail delivers mail sent to yourname+shop@gmail.com to the same inbox as yourname@gmail.com. Instagram usually treats the alias as a different address, so you can use it to register a new account while all emails still land in one inbox. Instagram can reject some aliases, so if it does, use Method 1 or 2.
Method 4: Use a Different Email Address
For brand or client accounts, a separate email (for example, a work address) is the cleanest option. If you ever hand the account to someone else, they can take over the email too.
How Many Instagram Accounts Can You Have?
You can add up to 5 accounts to the Instagram app and switch between them without logging out. You can create more than 5, but you will have to log out and back in to use the extra ones. Each account still needs its own unique username.
How to Switch Between Instagram Accounts
- Go to your profile.
- Tap your username at the top.
- Pick the account you want to use.
You can also long-press your profile picture in the bottom bar to open the account switcher.
Managing Accounts in Meta Accounts Center
Meta’s Accounts Center lets you connect your Instagram accounts (and Facebook, if you want) so you can share login details, cross-post and manage passwords in one place. Open it from Settings and activity > Accounts Center. From there you can add accounts, remove them, and turn shared login on or off.
Common Errors and Fixes
| Error | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Another account is using the same email” | The email is taken | Use Add account from inside the app, a phone number or a different email |
| Can’t add a 6th account | The in-app switching limit is 5 | Remove an account from the switcher or log in separately |
| Not receiving the code | Email or SMS delayed or in spam | Check spam, wait a few minutes, or request a new code |
| New account suspended soon after creation | Automated checks flagged it | Avoid creating many accounts quickly from one device and follow the appeal steps shown |
