Oh boy, it’s been quite the rollercoaster for Apple this first quarter of 2024! The tech giant’s smartphone shipments have dipped by about 10%, falling to 50.1 million iPhones from last year’s 55.4 million during the same period. This downturn comes despite Apple clinching the title as the world’s top phone maker last December—talk about a tough act to follow!
Meanwhile, the global smartphone market has been buzzing with activity, jumping 7.8% to a whopping 289.4 million units shipped from January to March. And guess who’s back on top? That’s right, Samsung, with its shiny new Galaxy S24 series, which launched at the start of the year and quickly shipped over 60 million units. They now hold a 20.8% market share, pushing Apple back to second place with 17.3%.
Not to be outdone, China’s own Xiaomi snagged the third spot with a 14.1% market share, while other Chinese brands like Huawei are also making their presence felt on the global stage.
Speaking of challenges, Apple has been facing some tough competition in China, its third biggest market. The company’s shipments there shrunk by 2.1% in the final quarter of 2023, amid some restrictions on the use of Apple devices by Chinese companies and government agencies.

But it’s not all cloudy skies for Apple! The company is gearing up for its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, where it’s expected to dazzle us with software updates for iPhones, iPads, and more. Plus, all eyes are on Apple as they dip their toes into the world of artificial intelligence, a hot topic that could redefine their gadgets yet again.
So, even though Apple has had to pass the crown back to Samsung and faces a tug-of-war in the global market, the tech scene remains as thrilling and dynamic as ever
