Winter came early to Kaghan this year. On Monday, November 2, Kaghan Valley woke up to heavy snowfall, and by evening the valley looked like a winter wallpaper. If your feed is full of snowy Naran reels right now, this is why.
Here’s the weather, the road situation, and everything you need to know before you pack your bags.
Where Did It Snow?
The snow started early Monday morning and fell on and off all day, covering:
- Naran
- Babusar Top
- Saiful Muluk Lake
- Battakundi
- Basal
- Lulusar Lake
Temperatures dropped sharply across the valley, and the weather turned properly chilly.
How Cold Is It?
Officials haven’t released exact temperatures for Kaghan or Naran yet. The PMD forecast for nearby Babusar (issued before the snow) gave:
- Day: around 11–13°C
- Night: as low as 1°C
After this snow, expect it to be colder than that, especially at night and higher up. Assume freezing temperatures after sunset.
Road Status: What’s Open and What’s Not
This is the most important part:
| Route | Status |
|---|---|
| Mansehra–Naran (MNJ Road) up to Naran | Cleared |
| Naran → Babusar Top | Tourists not allowed until the weather improves |
| KP ↔ Gilgit-Baltistan traffic | Temporarily suspended because of slippery roads |
| Naran → Saiful Muluk Lake | 4×4 vehicles only |
So yes, you can still reach Naran. Babusar Top is off-limits for now, and if you want to see Saiful Muluk in the snow, you’ll need a jeep.
Official Advisory
Hussain Deen, chairman of the Kaghan Valley Hotel Association, has asked motorists to be extra careful between Balakot and Naran and to strictly avoid rash driving. The roads are slippery, and one mistake on a mountain road can be serious.
What’s the Forecast?
The PMD forecast for Oct 31 to Nov 4 called for cloudy weather, light rain and light snow over the mountains in the Naran–Kaghan region. PMD also expects another spell of rain, wind and thunderstorms from November 5 across upper KP and Gilgit-Baltistan. More snow in the higher reaches is possible.
Is It a Good Time to Visit Kaghan?
Short answer: yes, if you’re prepared.
You get snow-covered peaks with fewer crowds than in summer. But time is running out. Local wildlife officials say the tourist season will likely end in December, when Kaghan usually gets its heaviest snow and communication links are cut. Many locals also move down to lower Mansehra for the winter.
If you’ve been planning a snowy Naran trip, the next few weeks are your window.
Travel Checklist Before You Go
- Check road status the morning you leave. Conditions change fast.
- Pack heavy layers: jackets, gloves, beanies and thermal wear.
- Keep your fuel tank above half.
- Hire a 4×4 or jeep for Saiful Muluk and higher spots.
- Don’t drive at night on mountain roads.
- Save Rescue 1122 and local police numbers.
- If heavy rain or snow starts on the road, turn back and wait in town.
