‘Queen of Asia,’ the largest Sapphire gemstone, was discovered in Rathnapura, Sri Lanka! The blue Sapphire is said to be 683-pound and is being called the ‘Queen of Asia.’ This stone is the largest Sapphire stone to behave found in Sri Lanka.
According to reports, Rathnapura is known as the city of gems, declared by the Gem’s trader background in July. The stone is said to go out for auction on 20th January, but some offers are still being made. One of them is for $1 million from South Asia.
Sri Lanka is known for mining and digging gemstones. Between 1964-2014, more than 2 million mining pits were dug. A few years ago, a minor accidentally dug a 2.5-million carat star Sapphire cluster, valued at $100 million. In 2014, a 392-carat Sapphire was sold for $17 million, making it the priciest sold Sapphire in the world.
The Sri lankan authorities have said that they thought to break the stone in half but then decided against it, and now it will be sold as a single piece. “This is not an aggregate. It is a single stone. As far as we know, it could be the largest recorded corundum in the world,” One government individual said. However, the actual value of the ‘Queen of Asia’ is yet to be estimated.
The owners are compiling potential buyers, such as “museums and high net worth individuals,” for an upcoming auction, according to Chamila Suranga, the representative for the Gemological Institute of Ratnapura. She also told Forbes magazine that the stone could be sold for as much as $100 million.
The stone, when found, was put on display in the house of the gem pit owner in the town of Horana, where some Buddhists blessed the stone.
