Whenever you have a friend or loved one who is going through a tough moment, you should always be there to offer them a hug. Scientists have shown that physically comforting someone reduces their tension. The comforter may also feel a reduction in their own stress levels.

Hugs have been shown to reduce stress, which can positively effect your health. Hugging may reduce the risk of getting sick, according to a poll of almost 400 people. Those who had more people rooting for them were less likely to get sick. Individuals who had more people they could turn to for aid when they became sick recovered faster and with fewer complications.

Scientists have coined the term “cuddle hormone” to describe the hormone oxytocin, which is naturally produced in human bodies. This is because its concentrations increase when we socially interact with another person, such as by hugging, holding hands, or simply sitting close to them. Reduced stress and increased joy have both been related to oxytocin.

The profound effect this hormone has on females was also uncovered by scientists. Oxytocin lowers blood pressure and norepinephrine levels. One research found that the positive benefits of oxytocin were greatest among women who reported having stronger bonds and embraced their romantic partners more often. Keeping a newborn close to a mother increases her oxytocin levels.

It’s possible that hugs are good for your heart, too. In one study, researchers split a group of about 200 participants in half. For 10 minutes, one set of lovers held hands before enjoying a brief 20-second hug. Couples made comprised the other group, which sat quietly for 10 minutes and 20 seconds. Both blood pressure and heart rate were lower in the first group compared to the second. According to these results, having a meaningful connection may benefit your cardiovascular system.
