Australia beat Sri Lanka by five wickets on Monday, their first win of the 2023 World Cup. Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis both scored fifty runs.
Sri Lanka was bowled out for 209 runs by leg-spinner Adam Zampa. It was a score that the five-time winners beat in 35.2 overs at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium.
Australia got their first win in three games, while Sri Lanka lost their third game in a row, putting their dreams of making it to the semi-finals in danger.
After losing the first two games to India and South Africa, Australia acted quickly with the ball and bowled Sri Lanka out for 209 in 44 overs. Adam Zampa had the best numbers with 4-47.
Near the middle of the innings, Sri Lanka was 157-1 and looked like they were going to make it to 300. But their innings started to fall apart, and they had to settle for a score that wasn’t good enough.
Strong winds made it take longer for Australia to start their chase, but they made light work of a small target. Josh Inglis scored 58, and Glenn Maxwell added 31. They were able to get home with almost 15 overs to spare.
As part of the round-robin system, all 45 league matches in the Cricket World Cup will be played between all 32 teams.
The semi-finals will be held in Mumbai on November 15 and in Kolkata on November 16. The top four teams will make it there. There will be spare days for the semi-finals and the final.
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 winner will get $4 million. The winner will get US$2 million, and each of the runner-ups and semi-finalists will get US$800,000. The total prize pool is US$10 million.
Each team that wins a game in the group stage will get US$40,000, and each of the six teams that doesn’t make it to the semi-finals will get US$100,000.
