Oscar-winning music maestro AR Rahman recently shared his battle with mental health during an interaction with students at the Oxford Union Debating Society. The talented composer revealed that he had grappled with suicidal thoughts in his youth and credited his mother for helping him overcome those dark moments.

Rahman spoke candidly about the invaluable advice his mother had given him, stating, “When I had suicidal thoughts when I was young, my mother used to say, ‘When you live for others, you won’t get these thoughts.’ That’s one of the most beautiful pieces of advice I got from my mother.” The revelation sheds light on the power of familial support and the impact of simple yet profound words during challenging times.

The maestro’s openness about his struggles with mental health adds a human dimension to his illustrious career, emphasizing that even those who seem invincible face their battles. Rahman’s vulnerability resonates with many who may be silently grappling with similar issues, breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health discussions.

Responding to a question on spirituality during the Oxford Union event, Rahman emphasized the transient nature of life, stating, “We all have dark times. One thing is definite; it’s a small little travel in this world. We were born, and we’re going to go. It’s not a permanent place for us.” His perspective encourages a broader conversation on mental health, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and finding purpose beyond personal struggles.

AR Rahman’s journey from battling inner demons to becoming a global musical icon not only showcases his resilience but also underscores the critical role of family support and meaningful advice in navigating life’s challenges. As he continues to inspire through his music, Rahman’s openness about his mental health journey serves as a beacon of hope for those facing similar struggles.
