Adam Mckay directs; the cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Cate Blanchet and Meryl Streep also add a flair of comedy, class, and satire to the movie. There are also excellent performances by Jonah Hill, Timothee Chalamet, and Mark Rylance. Ariana Grande makes a guest appearance. From the trailer, it looked like an end of the world movie, but this is far from it.

The director Adam Mckay gives us a comical portrayal of the end of the world escalade, never losing sight of the indifference that people (in movies) have towards the upcoming doomsday.

Jennifer is a grad student, while Leo is her professor.

In a very subtle way, this movie is relatable to everyone. The end of the world is compared to the never-ending COVID-19 that we have. The film is satirical, explaining the world’s view on this pandemic. All the while, the world is adamant on denying the pandemic’s impact.

What is the Plot of the movie?

Jennifer Lawrence, a grad student with a degree in astronomy, with her professor’s help (Leonardo DiCaprio), discovers a comet orbiting the Earth in the solar system. They try to inform the world, but it is not as easy as it seems because who really cares about the potential destruction of planet Earth? These actors then navigate through the media industry, trying to let the world know of the upcoming comet. In the end, all they want to find is the answer to the question – What will it take for the world to look up?

Who are the characters based on?

  • When the trailer dropped, people thought that Meryl Streep’s character was based on the almost-President of the USA – Hillary Clinton. However, Meryl Streep’s character is based on Donald Trump.
  • While he does not have one definite inspiration, Mark Rylance’s character has several from the Tech Industry. After careful consideration and many debates, it seems fitting to deduce that Mark’s company looks a lot like Apple in the movie.
  • Erik Parillo’s character is undoubtedly based on Joe Arpaio – the disgraced former Sherriff from Maricopa County from 1993-2017.
  • Cate Blanchet’s character of the media person is inspired by MSNBC’s show – Morning Joe.

This movie is definitely worth a watch!
