Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) And How To Fight It

High-carbohydrate diets might make insulin levels go higher. Ask your provider if a low-carbohydrate diet could help if you have PCOS. Choose complex carbohydrates, which raise your blood sugar levels more slowly. Complex carbohydrates are found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and cooked dry beans and peas.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is prevailing in our society and is a leading cause of infertility in women. Unfortunately, female reproductive education remains a silent taboo which is why Pakistani women are rarely educated about why their menstrual cycle has been delayed for months.

POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME (PCOS) is the hormonal imbalance of female reproductive hormones which results in enlarged ovaries with fluid filled sacs. While these sacs may be harmless, in certain cases ovaries are unable to release the egg leading to immature menstrual cycle that is absence of ovulation.

It is usually diagnosed after puberty, when women are between the ages of 20 and 30 years. Those women who are overweight or have a family history are at a higher risk of getting PCOS. If you experience any of the following, please consult your Gynaecologist immediately.

  • Irregular menstrual cycle: 8 or fewer menstrual cycles in a year, cycle of more than 35 days or erratic bleeding including heavy periods.
  • Hirsutism: Too much hair growth over face, chin, or parts of body where usually men have hair.
  • Acne on the face, chest, and upper back
  • Hair Thinning or hair loss on the scalp, similar to baldness in men

While PCOS is a major problem in women these days, it isn’t one that can’t be cured. With a positive mind and healthy lifestyle, anyone can fight it. Apart from the medication prescribed by the doctor here are some tips one can follow to kick PCOS away:

  • Limit carbohydrates: High-carbohydrate diets might make insulin levels go higher. Ask your provider if a low-carbohydrate diet could help if you have PCOS. Choose complex carbohydrates, which raise your blood sugar levels more slowly. Complex carbohydrates are found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and cooked dry beans and peas.
  • Stay at a healthy weight: Weight loss can lower insulin and androgen levels. It also may restore ovulation. Ask your health care provider about a weight-control program, if you need one. Meet with a registered dietitian for help in reaching weight-loss goals.
  • Be active: Exercise helps lower blood sugar levels. If you have PCOS, increasing your daily activity and getting regular exercise may treat or even prevent insulin resistance. Being active may also help you keep your weight under control and avoid developing diabetes.
