Ghost of Tsushima's Triumph on Steam: A Record-Breaking PC Launch

Ghost of Tsushima’s PC debut has been a remarkable success, emerging as PlayStation’s biggest single-player game launch on Steam.

Despite the previous PSN sign-up debacle surrounding Helldivers 2, Ghost of Tsushima has shattered expectations. Although some skepticism about Sony’s cautious tactics lingered, the game overcame early negative reviews.

Initially, the Steam reception for Ghost of Tsushima was marred by residual dissatisfaction over the Helldivers 2 PSN sign-up fiasco. However, according to Forbes, the reviews saw a dramatic turnaround.

The backlash stemmed from Arrowhead Game Studios’ announcement that Helldivers 2 PC players had to link their PSN accounts to Steam, which led to a wave of negative reviews and negative publicity, forcing Sony to retract the requirement.

In contrast, Ghost of Tsushima’s PSN account requirement was clearly communicated, with Sucker Punch Productions clarifying that it was only necessary for multiplayer co-op and the PlayStation overlay. This transparency allowed players to enjoy the single-player campaign without linking their PSN accounts to Steam.

According to Steam DB data cited by GamesRadar, Ghost of Tsushima achieved a peak concurrent player count of 77,500, surpassing popular titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man, God of War 2018, and The Last of Us Part 1.

Despite Helldivers 2 holding the record as Sony’s most successful PC game with 12 million copies sold across PS5 and Steam within just 12 weeks, Sony is likely delighted with Ghost of Tsushima’s impressive PC launch, especially considering its initial release on PlayStation 4 in July 2020.
