An Iranian hermit nicknamed the “world’s dirtiest man” for not taking a shower for more than half a century has died at the healthy old age of 94. Local media stated that Haji, who was covered in soot and lived in a cinder-block shanty, had not bathed with water or soap in more than 60 years. Villagers claimed he refused to wash because of “emotional difficulties in his youth.”
According to the Tehran Times, Haji ate roadkill, smoked a pipe filled with animal excrement, and believed that cleanliness would make him sick. He was photographed smoking multiple cigarettes at the same time.
Amou Haji lived in the village of Dejgah in the southern province of Fars. A few months ago, villagers had persuaded him to wash for the first time. After Haji’s death, the unofficial record could go to an Indian man who also had not bathed for much of his life.
He mainly ate dead animals and particularly liked porcupine meat, drank 1.5 gallons of water a day, cut his hair by burning it over a fire, and smoked countless cigarettes gifted to him by villagers. Although he lived in Isolation in an open bricked hut.
Amou Hai had a strong belief that he would die if he bathed however, the villagers forced him. Having finally succumbed to pressure and washed, Haji became ill shortly afterward and died at the age of 94.
